Avelox has in vitro activity against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, anaerobic, and atypical microorganisms.

Avelox has shown clinical efficacy against susceptible isolates of the following microorganisms in approved clinical indications.

  • Aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms

Enterococcus faecalis
     (vancomycin-, gentamycin-susceptible strains only)
Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-susceptible strains only)
Streptococcus agalactiae
Streptococcus anginosus
Streptococcus constellatus
Streptococcus pneumoniae
     (including multi-drug resistant strains*)
Streptococcus pyogenes (group A)

  • Aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms

Enterobacter cloacae
Escherichia coli
Haemophilus influenzae (±b -lactamase)
Haemophilus parainfluenzae
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Moraxella catarrhalis (±b -lactamase)
Proteus mirabilis

  • Atypicals

Clostridium perfringens
Legionella pneumophila
Mycoplasma pneumoniae

  • Anaerobes

Bacteroides fragilis
Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron
Peptostreptococcus spp.
Clostridium perfringens

*Multi-drug resistant S. pneumoniae includes isolates previously known as PRSP (penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae), and are strains resistant to 2 or more of the following antibiotics: penicillin (MIC≥2 mg/mL), 2nd generation cephalosporins (e.g. cefuroxime),
macrolides, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
